    Dental Braces vs. Invisalign

Posted on August 3rd, 2015 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

If you are considering options for improving your smile, you have probably come across the option of Invisalign. Invisalign is an alternative treatment for cosmetic dental issues. Most people like the option of Invisalign because they do not want to get traditional dental braces--be it because of the discomfort or the way the look. Below are some of the key differences between Invisalign and dental braces that you should consider while making your decision. What They Are Braces: Dental braces are metal brackets that are glued to your teeth. They are connected by a series of wires and/or small rubber bands and are clearly visible when you open your mouth. Over time, they reposition your teeth to get a desired effect. They are a permanent fixture to your mouth while they are attached. You cannot remove traditional dental braces. Invisalign: Invisalign is a virtually invisible tray generated by a computer into which the teeth are set. They too help reposition your teeth for a desired effect. Invisalign trays can be removed and, in fact, need to be whenever you eat or drink anything other than water. How Long They Take Braces: Every patient is different. Depending on the desired result and also the current placement of an individual’s teeth, treatment lengths vary. On average, braces take around two years to work completely. After the braces are removed, the patient may need to wear a retainer or have a permanent retainer put into place. Invisalign: Invisalign is also subject to the needs of specific patients. On average, Invisalign takes six to eighteen months. Invisalign takes a little bit longer to get results because the treatment is not quite as aggressive as dental braces. After the treatment period, patients may be asked to wear a retainer or a positioner on an ongoing basis or at night. How To Maintain Them Braces: Braces are maintained the same way that you would otherwise practice good oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing, and the use of mouthwash regularly are all that is needed. Visits to the orthodontist are usually monthly for tightenings and reworking. Invisalign: To maintain Invisalign trays, you need to clean them separately than your teeth. Because they are removable, this is very easy. They can be brushed at the same time as brushing your teeth. You also need to take them out when you are eating or drinking anything other than water, and brush your teeth before putting them back in to avoid staining. Often, you will replace the trays around every two weeks and see your dental health professional around every four to six weeks. If the issue with your teeth deals more with functionality, sometimes braces are the better option. Invisalign may be a great option for those seeking cosmetic dental changes. The great thing about Invisalign treatments is that nobody needs to know that you have them. Because they are nearly invisible, people will assume that your teeth are naturally beautiful!
