Impacted Wisdom Teeth: What Does it Mean?

Posted on June 4th, 2015 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

A tooth is considered an "impacted tooth" when it fails to break through the gum. This is especially common in wisdom teeth, the last teeth to emerge. Generally speaking, wisdom teeth tend to come in between the ages of 17 and 21. An impacted tooth occurs when the jaw is too small, so the area is already overcrowded, leaving no room for the wisdom teeth to come in. While impacted wisdom teeth can be painless and cause no further issues, they can sometimes push the surrounding teeth, which push their surrounding teeth and so on. This results in bite misalignment, and can cause more severe problems like an infection or malocclusion. Partially emerged wisdom teeth may also be problematic as food and plaque may get stuck in the surrounding tissue, causing tender gums, bad breath and even tooth decay. What are the symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth?
    1. Occasional trouble opening the mouth
    2. Pain or tenderness in the gums
    3. Redness or swelling in the gums
    4. Bad breath
    5. Headaches or jaw aches
    6. Visible gap where tooth should have emerged
If you don't experience any of the above and your impacted tooth or teeth aren't causing problems, you may not need any treatment. However if you are experiencing these symptoms, make an appointment with your wisdom teeth dentist right away. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help, but many times the affected teeth will need to be removed at your dentist's office.   Courtesy of MedlinePlus
