    Strength of Sugar

Posted on March 23rd, 2016 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

It is hard not to have a sweet tooth. After all, you don’t eat dessert thinking it won’t be delicious! However, sugar can cause many problems, including dental issues. It is important to know how to curb your sugar intake, as well as when to brush after eating sugary food. Sometimes, the amount of sugar is less important than how long the sugar has stayed on your teeth. Getting a cavity does not require a lot of sugar, just a longer period of time. Certain sugary foods lead to sugar staying in your mouth longer, such as lollipops and other hard candies. If you do end up eating a lollipop, it is important to brush your teeth earlier rather than later. In addition, with hard candies, they can chip away at your teeth causing you to need emergency dental care. There are different types of sugar, and some are stronger than others. Caramel and other chewy desserts stick everywhere in your mouth, from the roof to your back molars. Brushing and flossing will be your best friends when it comes time for caramel apples. Sour candy is also bad news, for the high acidic count feeds the bad bacteria in your mouth and breaks down enamel. Sugary foods are known for decaying the tooth and causing cavities. A big part of proper dental care is making sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day. However, if you had a particularly sugary meal or ate a dessert, you may want to consider brushing your teeth within an hour after eating to prevent further tooth decay. If you have been noticing tooth pain or haven’t been to the dentist in six months, schedule an appointment with Chicago Smile Design today. Courtesy of: Dentistry IQ
