Surprising Facts About Canker Sores

Posted on December 6th, 2019 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

While winter in Chicago is known for its chilly evenings, cozy fires and sweet treats galore, winter is also known for plenty of people suffering from a cold or the flu. Many patients visit our dentist in Chicago, Il during the winter months with complaints about canker sores. The reality is, canker sores are "in season" during the winter months and appear more often than they do in the summer months. Not only may they cause you to feel embarrassed about your smile, but they are frustrating and even painful, making simple activities like eating and talking painful. Here are some interesting facts about canker sores that you may not have previously known.

They Typically Go Away Naturally

Canker sores typically have a cycle and go away on their own after one or two weeks. Feel free to purchase over-the-counter medications to help speed up the healing process so you can return to your normal routine quicker. If your canker sore is lasting for more than two weeks, we recommend making an appointment with our dentist in Chicago, Il so we can see if there is a bigger issue at play.

They Aren't Contagious

Sharing saliva is commonly associated with developing a canker sore, but this isn't the case. Canker sores are not contagious and won't spread with direct contact. Cold sores, on the other hand, are contagious, so that is something to make note of.

There's an Early Warning Sign

Although you may not realize it, many canker sores produce an early warning sign that they are coming a few days before they appear. If you feel a slight burning or tingling sensation in or around your mouth and lips, this is typically a sign that a canker sore is developing. You will notice that a small bump will eventually break the surface of the skin about one day later.

They May Reappear

Canker sores can be persistent with their targets. Over time, you may notice that you are getting canker sores repeatedly, although they may appear months apart from each other. If you find yourself frustrated with consistent canker sores, it's never a bad idea to schedule a visit with our team. That is no way to go through life!

The Cause is Unknown

Scientists still aren't sure the true reasoning behind canker sore development, however, doctors have been able to pinpoint risk factors that increase your chances of developing one. Stress, poor nutrition, changes in hormones, viruses, bacteria, food allergies and immune system issues are all risk factors that could result in the development of a canker sore.

There are Prescriptions Available

You shouldn't have to go through life constantly battling a canker sore. There are prescription mouthwashes and medications that can help keep canker sores to a minimum so you don't have to sacrifice your quality of life. Our team will work with you to make sure your canker sores are under control. When in doubt, please schedule an appointment with our dentist in Chicago, Il to get the canker sore treatment that you need!
