Often, a patient will have a tooth that is so decayed that it must be removed; teeth can also be lost due to accidental trauma. In cases like this, the dentists can implant a false replacement tooth directly into the jawbone.
Although teeth take up the better part of what the dentist does, the gums and jawbones are also treated. Gum disorders such as gingivitis can be treated with early intervention. The dentist will also perform oral surgery in certain situations, such as the surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth.
