    Visiting a Dental Clinic

Posted on December 8th, 2015 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Clinical dentistry involves the implementation of procedures performed on the teeth and gums. Dentists and their assistants perform the majority of these procedures. There are numerous services offered which include general dental services, cosmetic dentistry, sedation dentistry, and more. A typical dental clinic includes one or more licensed dentists, and in the event the clinic houses multiple dentists, often they specialize in a specific dental discipline. A general dentist focuses on tooth and gum examinations, diagnosis of problems or potential problems, and a myriad of procedures to correct the problem. The dentist is supported in his or her work with assistants, hygienists, and lab technicians. A significant part of clinical dentistry involves tooth restoration. A patient who, after being examined, is found to have cavities is subjected to various procedures which include preparation of the site, filling the cavity with a safe but durable material, and in some instances, covering the restored tooth with a crown. If the dentists should find evidence of infection of the tooth root a root canal is often performed. This is a dental procedure where the root is removed from within the core of the tooth, effectively deadening the tooth but allowing it to remain in the jaw. General dentists also are very active in and keen on preventative maintenance of healthy teeth. Most dentists will subject their patients to a routine professional cleaning before examining them further; this procedure eliminates any built up plaque on the surface of the teeth. During the cleaning, the dental hygienist will spend time explaining the proper procedures to follow for effective brushing and flossing. If the patient is found to have teeth that are crooked, oddly spaced, or the bite is incorrect, the dentist may fit the patient with invisible aligners which slowly correct the misalignment. Often, a patient will have a tooth that is so decayed that it must be removed; teeth can also be lost due to accidental trauma. In cases like this, the dentists can implant a false replacement tooth directly into the jawbone. Although teeth take up the better part of what the dentist does, the gums and jawbones are also treated. Gum disorders such as gingivitis can be treated with early intervention. The dentist will also perform oral surgery in certain situations, such as the surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth. If you are looking for general dentists in Chicago that can handle the dental needs of you and your family, you are invited to make an appointment with Dr. Tomaselli at Chicago Smile Design. Visiting a dental clinic does not need to be a chore any longer.
