    Why You Should Smile More

Posted on August 16th, 2016 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Smiling is the greatest physical expression of positivity, but what many don’t know is that it’s also a healthy act. However, no matter how healthy the act may be, if people aren’t confident in their smiles then they likely won’t do it. Fortunately, Lincoln Park dentists can help with that. Here are just a few reasons to feel confident in your smile and improve your health, happiness, and success. Smiling Makes You Happier  - The act of smiling releases endorphins, which in turn reduces stress levels and makes you feel happier. Even forced smiles have this effect. You can actually trick your brain and body into thinking you feel happy, comfortable, and at peace by striking a voluntary smile. Happiness has also been linked to productivity and creativity. By smiling you can boost your creativity and productivity in the workplace and be more successful at your job. Smiling Improves Your Immune System - When you smile your body releases more white blood cells than usual. White blood cells are the cells of the immune system, so having more course through your body boosts your fight against disease and makes you healthier in general. Smiling Makes You More Approachable and Trustworthy - It’s no secret that we’re much more likely to want to get to know someone who is smiling. Smiling conveys openness, acceptance, and likeability—all of which reinforce trust and make the smiling person more attractive physically and emotionally. According to a 2004 Penn State University study, smiling also makes the wearer appear more competent, which in turn makes others trust them. A Pittsburg University study confirms this, concluding that the bigger the smile a person wears the more trustworthy they seem. Smiling Is Contagious - We all have something called mirror neurons in our bodies which are activated when we perform or witness a given action, including smiles. Mirror neurons help us to understand each other by performing the actions ourselves—contagious reciprocation. And, as stated above, smiling boosts all kinds of positive feelings and behaviors. So give a smile, get a smile! Smiling is essentially a free mood booster, but if you already don’t feel good about the smile you’re putting out into the world then you are probably reluctant to show it. Lincoln Park dentists are committed to making sure you feel good about your smile because it’s so much more than just an expression. One smile can infect positivity all around it. Chicago Smile Design is a team of Lincoln Park dentists who are dedicated to giving you a smile you feel confident about.
