    Wisdom Teeth Survival Guide

Posted on June 21st, 2016 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

The phrase “wisdom teeth” does not have the best reputation, as most associate them with having surgery, not actual wisdom. Though some are able to go without ever having them removed, many must get one to four removed. Wisdom teeth crop up in about 90 percent of people, and many are impacted. Wisdom teeth can either be impacted or erupted. If they are impacted, there is not enough room for the tooth to come in, which is when surgery is definitely necessary. If they are erupted, and you have enough room in your mouth for the teeth, you may be able to avoid surgery.

    Wisdom Teeth Removal Chicago

Your dentist has told you that you have wisdom teeth; now what? Again, this depends on if you need to get them removed, but in all likelihood, you do need to have them removed. Sometimes your dentist will be able to remove your wisdom teeth themselves, but they also may need to refer you to an oral surgeon. It is important to schedule your wisdom teeth extraction as soon as you can to avoid disease.

    Potential Complications

The main reason why it is important to get your wisdom teeth extracted early is the potential complications that can crop up. Without surgery, infections, lesions, tumors, and damage to other teeth are all potential problems that can occur. Periodontal disease affects many that do not take care of their asymptomatic wisdom teeth. Tracking disease in your mouth will be important for those that can keep their wisdom teeth.
