Sweet summertime has finally arrived! All that sunshine and warm weather means plenty of outdoor activities, vacations, and of course, ice cream! Make sure while having all that summer fun that you keep oral hygiene in the back of your mind. Here are some reminders that will keep your mouth happy this summer!
Drink Water
Stay hydrated in that summer heat. Not only is drinking water good to replenish what you sweat out during the long summer days and keep you cool, it’s also a great way to keep your mouth clean! Drinking water regularly helps flush out food particles left over from previous meals and snacks.
Consider a Mouth Guard
Summer often means outdoor activities. If you plan on staying active this summer by playing contact sports, consider a mouthguard. Mouthguards can be extremely helpful in preventing dental injuries during contact sports such as football, basketball, and soccer.
Wear Lip Balm
Your teeth aren’t the only part of your mouth that need your care. Don’t forget about your lips! Wear lip balms with sun protectant to avoid sunburn and chapping. Consider lip balms with SPF 15 or greater.
Brush & Floss During Travel
Summer vacations can be hectic and traveling can be a distraction from proper oral hygiene. Make sure to pack your toothbrush and floss in your carry-on or somewhere accessible so that you can brush and floss during bathroom breaks, layovers, and stops!
Bring Healthy Snacks Along
If you are traveling to a vacation spot this summer, avoid the airport Cinnabon and opt for healthy options that will keep your teeth healthy. Fruits and veggies are a great substitute for sugary alternatives.
Save the Sweets for Special Occasions
Everybody loves ice cream during the summer--it’s a cultural staple. Just make sure to remember that all that sugar can cause tooth decay. Make sure to save ice cream and other summer sweets for special occasions, and always remember to brush after eating!
