    Questions About Cosmetic Dentistry

Posted on November 17th, 2014 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Cosmetic dentistry can significantly improve the appearance of a person's smile. If you are considering a cosmetic dentistry procedure, you likely have some questions. Continue reading for answers to common questions patients have. If you still have questions, visit our site or call the Chicago Smile Design office at 312-661-2100.

How do I know if a cosmetic dentistry procedure is right for me?

Whether you want to straighten, whiten or replace teeth, there is most likely a procedure that will work for your needs. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry is to schedule a consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist in your area. He or she can examine your current dental health, discuss what you would like to improve, and recommend the best procedures to achieve your best smile. If you have existing dental health problems (cavities, gum disease, etc.) they should be treated before undergoing a cosmetic procedure.

Can I be sedated during a procedure?

Yes. Chances are your cosmetic dentist has a variety of options available to keep you relaxed throughout your treatment. The type and level of sedation chosen for you will depend on the specific procedure as well as your health and medical history, however most patients do not require a high level of sedation.

What options are there for replacing teeth?

Dentures are one option for replacing missing teeth; however they come with some drawbacks. Dental bridges and implants are the more effective form of treatment, as they are more permanent. Speak with your dentist to determine which will work best for your needs.

What are the side effects of teeth whitening?

Dentistry technology has come a long way, and there are a number of measures taken to ensure patients experience little to no discomfort during an in-office teeth whitening. The patient will have a protective shield made of rubber or gel to prevent the whitening agent from coming in contact with the gums. In addition, you will likely be given goggles for eye protection. Following the procedure, you may experience mild sensitivity that may last a few days.

Can children or teenagers undergo cosmetic dentistry procedures?

If medication has caused your child's teeth to become discolored, or if he or she has sustained a tooth fracture due to a sports injury, you may be interested in whether cosmetic dentistry procedures would be an appropriate treatment. Depending on your child's age and development, some procedures may be suitable. Once again, your dentist should be the go-to when making this decision.
