Thanksgiving is a great time for our mouths; we get to enjoy festive foods we crave all year. While many people are concerned about the calorie intake over the holidays, a lot of popular Thanksgiving dishes are actually good for your teeth!
THE TURKEY: The main part of the meal, turkey is high in protein and phosphorous, which combined with calcium and vitamin D, is necessary for our bodies to make bones and teeth and keep them strong.
THE MASHED POTATOES: Dairy products used in mashed potatoes are low in sugar and acidity. Sugar and acids can attack the tooth enamel, buildup bacteria and result in tooth decay and cavities.
THE VEGGIES: Pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and more are rich in vitamin A, which is used to form tooth enamel.
ONIONS: While it may not result in the best breath, onions contain compounds that fight the harmful bacteria that is bad for teeth and gums.
CRANBERRIES: Most people's favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal! Cranberries are full of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, beta-carotene and more. They also interfere with the ability of a harmful bacteria to stick to teeth, limiting plaque formation.
Have a happy Thanksgiving!
