    The Right Gear

Posted on October 20th, 2015 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Most people grow up knowing to brush and floss (although many just brush!). However, there are other steps you can take to make sure that your oral hygiene is the best it can be. It is also important to make sure that you have the right kind of tools, such as the best type of floss for your teeth and more.

    Toothbrush:

When it comes to your toothbrush, it is important to replace it every couple of months, or when the bristles become frayed. In addition, if you have been sick, it is good to throw out your toothbrush, even if you just opened it a week ago. When you buy a toothbrush, try to go for a brush with a head of around one inch long and a half inch wide, preferably with soft bristles to avoid gum damage.

    Toothpaste:

Depending on the condition of your teeth, you will want to pick out your toothpaste more carefully. You’ll want to focus on any toothpastes that promote the reduction of plaque and surface stains. Other than that, there are toothpastes that can help with other issues, such as weakened enamel or sensitive teeth. When you have sensitive teeth, you should consider buying toothpaste that has desensitizing agents to help protect the nerves in your teeth.

    Floss:

Most flosses will work for anyone, but if you have spacing issues, you may want to get a different kind of floss. With tightly spaced teeth, waxed floss will be easier to maneuver. If you have widely spaced teeth, there is tape-style floss or regular un-waxed floss.

Good dental hygiene does not affect only your oral health, but your overall well-being. Making sure you have the right tools to keep your teeth healthy is important, as is knowing what else is out there to help assist you, such as mouthwash, fluoride, and whitening kits.
