What do Veneers fix? Composite vs Porcelain Veneers?

Posted on May 19th, 2015 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Dental veneers are a great way to improve your smile, Chicago Smile Design is commonly asked, "What do Veneers Fix?" or "Should I get Composite vs Porcelain Veneers?" We tell our patients veneers are stain-resistant, look and feel natural that can restore your self-confidence. Patients are advised there are two different types of veneers: composite, and porcelain. Dr Tomaselli and Chicago Smile Design will help you in determining which kind of veneers will work best for you. Composite veneers are coatings applied to the affected tooth or teeth in a single visit by the cosmetic dentist at Chicago Smile Design. Composite veneers generally last between five and seven years. Porcelain veneers are custom-made to fit your teeth, requiring at least two dental visits: one to fit your teeth, and the second to put the veneers in place. Porcelain veneers cost more than composite veneers, but will last at least 10 to 15 years. The procedure for creating and applying porcelain veneers is a little more complicated.

Typically at Chicago Smile Design Veneers are used to fix:

    The Porcelain Veneer process:

    • During your initial visit, Chicago Smile Design team will take x-rays.
    • Each tooth/teeth to have a veneer applied will have its enamel shaved down about half a millimeter to prepare for the veneers.
    • An impression or mold of your teeth will be taken and then sent to a lab.
    • One to two weeks later, the veneers should be ready
    • Dr Tomaselli will clean your tooth/teeth thoroughly and roughen the tooth surface (this improves the veneer's adhesion).
    • Using a special cement, the veneers are attached to the teeth. Light is then applied to dry.
    • Dr. Tomaselli and the Chicago Smile Design team might request a follow-up visit a few weeks after the procedure to ensure the veneers still look and function correctly. Always make sure to practice your regular oral hygiene, brushing twice a day and flossing daily, in order to keep your smile healthy and ensure your veneers last as long as possible.
