    Parts of A Dental Implant

Posted on August 15th, 2018 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Dental implants are a great solution to cracked or missing teeth, and at Chicago Smile Design, our dentists have years of implant experience under their belts. If simple things such as eating and speaking become difficult because you are embarrassed or in pain, our dental implants in Chicago can help. If you aren’t familiar with the process of getting dental implants in Chicago, here are the steps that you should know so you are prepared for the procedure.

    The Fixture

The fixture is the bottom part of the implant that is placed into your jaw bone. If you are unsure if your jaw is strong enough, you should undergo a bone graft. Over time, the fixture will bond to your jaw bone and they will become like one. The bonding will help prevent your jawbone from deteriorating.

    The Abutment

The second part of your dental implant is the abutment. This is a small part that lies right around your gum line and helps hold the prosthesis in place.

    The Prosthesis

The third part of a dental implant is the prosthesis. This is what resembles a tooth and is visible. Your dentist will match it to the color of the rest of your teeth so that it fits in. People won’t even be able to tell that you have a dental implant. Contact Chicago Smile Design if you are interested in exploring dental implants in order to improve the way your smile looks!
