    Tips for a Whiter Smile

Posted on April 24th, 2014 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

    1. If you are serious about keeping your smile dazzling and white, cut out foods and drinks that stain. Coffee, black tea, red wine, dark soda and gravies are main culprits. Smoking cigarettes or cigars also have staining effects. If you can't stop yourself from eating or drinking these items, brush your teeth right after consumption. Eating apples can also effectively clean teeth.
    2. Every two to three months, replace your toothbrush. Bacteria builds up on your bush over time, and if you wait too long that bacteria is transferred to your mouth. Be sure to use proper brushing technique as well - angle your brush 45 degrees against your gums and move in a circular motion.
    3. Toothpaste that contains baking soda has whitening qualities, so try brushing with baking soda once a week. Put it on your toothbrush as you would with regular toothpaste. If your gums start feeling raw or sore, take a break.
    4. Brush your teeth right when you get up in the morning, and right before you go to bed. These are the two most important times to brush, as saliva production is significantly reduced at night. Cleaning off the plaque that may have built up throughout the day and overnight will decrease the risk of cavities and decay, and will keep teeth clean and shining!
    5.  For those that sport lipstick during the day, choose a coral or light red shade. Super light-colored colors will make your teeth look yellow.
