When You Should Change Your Toothbrush

Posted on May 29th, 2014 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

If you brush twice a day for at least two minutes each time, that's great! But if your toothbrush hasn't been replaced in over four months, it isn't working as efficiently to clean your teeth. Here are some warning signs that it is time to get a new toothbrush.

    • It's old. This is the most obvious sign that it's time for a new brush. Bristles that are fraying or becoming discolored should be a warning to you that your toothbrush has seen better days. This same rule applies for electronic toothbrush heads.
    • It sits out unprotected. Your bathroom harbors a lot of bacteria, and it's been said that bacteria from your toilet can travel up to six feet! If you leave your toothbrush sitting out on the bathroom counter without a cover, this bacteria will eventually get in your mouth and make it even less clean.
    • Its bristles are hard. Even if it seems like your hard-bristled toothbrush is more effective at removing plaque, it can also do damage to your teeth and gums. It is generally recommended that people choose soft-bristled toothbrushes.
    • It is uncomfortable. If your toothbrush just doesn't feel right while you are brushing, get a different one. Buy a brush that works for you and feels comfortable.
If your toothbrush falls into one or more of these categories, it's time for a new one! Your dentist can recommend certain brands or types for you if you need help. Courtesy of Bright Now
