    Caring for Sensitive Teeth

Posted on October 2nd, 2014 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

Do you find that your teeth hurt when eating hot or cold foods, or when you brush your teeth? You may have sensitive teeth.

    What causes sensitive teeth?

    • Worn enamel
    • Cavities
    • Fractured teeth
    • Worn fillings
    • Gum disease
    • Exposed root
Under the enamel and cementum (the layer that protects the tooth root) is the dentin, which contains tiny tubes. When enamel or cementum is worn, the dentin loses its protection and foods travel through these tubes to reach the nerves inside. The result is extreme sensitivity. If you have sensitive teeth, it can be treated in a variety of ways. Speak with your dentist for the treatment option that will work best for you. He or she may recommend one or more of the following:
    1. Fluoride treatments: This treatment strengthens tooth enamel and can be done in your dentist's office.
    2. Desensitizing toothpaste: These special toothpastes help block sensation from reaching the nerves. You will have to use it overtime to get the best results.
    3. Crowns or bonding: These are the best treatment options if the sensitivity is coming from a fractured tooth or a cavity.
    4. Surgical procedure: A procedure known as a gum graft protects exposed roots caused by loss of gum tissue.
    5. Root canal procedure: A root canal is the last resort option if no other treatments work to rid of sensitivity. Though the procedure has a negative stigma, it is very effective and causes minimal pain to the patient.
