Your dentist can help you with more than just diagnosing oral health issues. The health of your mouth can say a lot about your overall body health and potential conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and acid reflux. Here's how:
Heart Disease According to a 2007 study, those with periodontal disease (severe gum disease) have a significantly higher chance of contracting heart disease than those with good oral health. When periodontal disease is treated, heart disease improves.
Diabetes High blood sugar is associated with dry mouth, a large contributor to bacteria and plaque buildup. This buildup makes a person more prone to dental problems.
Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens the bones. It won't cause tooth decay, but with an X-ray your dentist may notice bone loss in the jaw and other supporting bones in the mouth.
Acid Reflux This intense heartburn is felt in the chest, but the symptoms may be clearest inside your mouth. Acid reflux causes stomach acid to rise and wear away tooth enamel. Bad breath and a constant sour taste in the mouth can also be a sign of acid reflux.
