Resolutions for Better Dental Health in 2015

Posted on December 9th, 2014 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

The new year is approaching, and now is as good a time as any to start thinking of your goals for 2015. Want to be more active? Try new things? Why not improve your dental health habits in the coming year?

Here are five ways you can!

#1: Quit Smoking Not surprisingly, smoking can affect your oral health in a variety of ways. From yellowing teeth, to bad breath, to even plaque buildup are all side effects of this bad habit. These all shy in comparison to the high risk of oral cancer associated with smoking. Put an effort into kicking the habit this coming year, and your whole body will feel better.

#2: Brush and Floss More This is one of the easiest resolutions you can have to better your dental health! All it takes is a few extra minutes in your day to have a healthier, more attractive smile. You should brush at least twice a day, and floss after meals if possible.

#3: Eat Smile-Friendly Foods Fruits, vegetables, dairy and other foods high in vitamin C, vitamin B12 and vitamin D strengthen both teeth and gums. Limit the amount of sugary and acidic foods in your diet, as they cause a buildup of bacteria on the surface and in between teeth, weakening enamel. If you have a medical condition, check with your physician before making extreme diet changes.

#4: Get Dental Treatments Out of the Way When was the last time you saw your dentist? Whether you have a cavity or other condition that needs to be addressed, or just need a cleaning and check-up, get it taken care of! The time and money you think you are saving will catch up with you if you have an untreated issue.

#5: Wear a Mouthguard If you participate in any contact sports, we hope you are already wearing a mouthguard while playing; and that goes for everyone, not just kids. There is a reason professionals wear them -- they work in protecting teeth from cracks and chips, falling out and other accidents.
