What is All-on-X, All-On-4 or All-On-6 Dental Implants all about?

Posted on May 21st, 2024 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

“What is All-on-X, All-On-4 or All-On-6 Dental Implants all about?”

This has come up lately from our Chicago Smile Design patients. Below I help potential implant patients understand why Chicago Smile Design is considered your Best option when looking for Dental Implants for All-On-X All-on-4, All-On-6, All-On-X  dental implants means replacing a patient’s natural teeth on a dental arch, with a prosthesis that’s supported by 4 or 6 implants.
    • How long does an All-on-4 procedure take?
While going through the pre-production planning stages of an All-on-4, All-on-6 or All-On-X procedure,  the process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on how fast the patient responds from the initial consultation. The All-on-4, All-On-6 or All-on-X procedure itself doesn’t take nearly as long. Typically, a patient can expect to have their new teeth on the same day of the procedure, or at most, within 2 days of the procedure. Doing an All-on-4 procedure, it typically means you are going to lose all your natural teeth, or you have no more natural teeth left. It would not be wise to remove any teeth that are healthy and strong. If you need one or two teeth removed or replaced, then receiving individual implants would be recommended. However, if all of your teeth are failing (unhealthy/unsalvageable) on a particular dental arch, then it would make the most sense to go with an All-On-4 prostheses to replace all of those failing teeth. All-on-4, All-On-6, All-On-X are designed to last a lifetime. With proper care, good health, great maintenance and follow up from those who did the work, they should last indefinitely!
    • If you do get an All-on-4, All-On-6 or All-On-X implants, do they look like real teeth?
The prosthetic teeth that are supported by the All-On-4, All-On-6 or All-On-X implants look as good or better than anybody’s natural teeth. The aesthetics on them are truly phenomenal! Also worth noting, the shades of the prosthetic teeth can be adjusted down to a patient’s level of personal preference.
    • When you get All-on-4, All-On-6 or All-On-X implants how many teeth do you get?
You are typically going to replace 12 to 14 teeth per dental arch.
    • Finally, are there any Downsides of getting All-on-4, All-On-6, or All-On-X?
The downside is All-on-4, All-On-6 or All-on-X implies chat you have no natural teeth, whatever lead to the demise of those natural teeth is a downside. The upside is that now you will have stable natural teeth that are fixed to dental implants. They will look great, function well and they will feel as close to natural teeth as modern dentistry allows. These are just some of the many questions we get at Chicago Smile Design regarding All-On-X, All-On-4 and All-On-6 dental implants. We know each patient has their own unique concerns, circumstances and needs.
