Healthy teeth are attractive teeth, but maintaining oral health decreases the risk of other illnesses and diseases as well, and vice versa. Wondering what conditions are related to oral health?

Pregnancy and birth:

Periodontal disease is correlated to premature birth and low birth weight.

Endocarditis: An infection of the heart lining, endocarditis is caused from bacteria from other parts of the body, like the mouth, travel and spread through the bloodstream to areas of the heart.

Cardiovascular disease:

Infection caused by oral bacteria have been shown to lead to clogged arteries, stroke and other heart disease.

Diabetes:

Those with diabetes have a reduced resistance to infection, increasing the risk of gum disease. Gum disease appears to be more common, and more serious, in those with diabetes. In addition, it is more difficult to control levels of blood sugar for people with gum disease.

Osteoporosis:

This disease causes one’s bones to weaken, which may be correlated with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss.

Alzheimer’s disease:

Those who have lost permanent teeth before the age of 35 may be at a greater risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

It is always important to keep an open communication with your dentist and other health professionals. Maintain a healthy smile and you will be doing your oral and overall health a favor.
