Pregnancy affects a woman’s body in many ways. While some are more noticeable, others may not be quite as obvious. Keep reading below to see what dental health concerns are specific to pregnant women.
Medications
If you are pregnant and had some sort of dental treatment, it is important that you let your dentist know of any prescription or over-the-counter drugs you are currently taking. That way, he or she can determine if you are able to take any medications during or after the treatment to rid of any pain and make you more comfortable. Your dentist wants to keep you and your baby as safe as possible, so be sure to voice any concerns you may have as well.
X-Rays
Radiation from x-rays is very low, but special precautions will be taken in case you need to diagnose a dental health issue or have a dental emergency. You will be provided with a leaded apron that limits the radiation’s exposure to the abdomen, as well as a leader collar to protect the thyroid.
Gingivitis
Pregnancy means lots of changes in hormones, which for some has resulted in an inflammation of the gums known as “pregnancy gingivitis.” This may cause swelling, tenderness, pain, and bleeding when you brush. If you begin to notice this, see your dentist for treatment right away, as it can become worse and develop into a more serious form of gum disease.
Pregnancy Tumors
As frightening as these sound, pregnancy tumors are non-cancerous growths that form on the gums, usually between teeth. Thought to be related to plaque, they appear raw and may bleed easily. While in most cases they will vanish after your baby is born, you can discuss removing them with your dentist if you would prefer.
Keep an open communication with your dentist and do not be afraid to express any worries you may have while pregnant.
