February is Heart Health Awareness Month and as such it’s important to understand how your oral health affects the health of your heart. Your body is a complex organism whose health relies on the collaborative efforts of many systems to run smoothly and effectively. Every part of your body affects another, so it’s vitally important to take care of it in every way. At Chicago Smile Design we understand the importance of routine oral care because know that it’s not just your mouth that is affected, it’s your heart.
Periodontal Disease
In 1989 two reports published by Scandinavian scientists reintroduced a long-held theory in the medical community that periodontal disease (gum disease) and heart disease were closely related. This report found symptomatic connections between the two diseases. Inflammation caused by spreading bacteria it the biggest link between the diseases. Periodontal disease manifests as infected pockets of bacterial puss, and this bacteria can make its way under the gums and into the bloodstream. That infected blood can move throughout the body and cause inflammation, which blocks arteries which can put someone at greater risk for a heart attack or stroke. Daily brushing, flossing, and
dental cleanings can prevent periodontal disease.
Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. This constant opening and closing of the throat repeatedly cuts off a person's oxygen supply to the brain and body which can have long-term health effects. Snoring or sleep apnea is much more than a nuisance, it is a chronic sleep disorder. Left untreated it can lead to serious health complications such as diabetes, stroke, heart failure, obesity, and even Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. The dentistry community has recognized this threat to health and come up with a solution: a custom fit mouthpiece. At Chicago Smile Design we create
custom designed mouth guards so you can enjoy comfortable, uninterrupted sleep. Contact Chicago Smile Design if you or your loved one suffers from snoring or has been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
