    Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Posted on October 19th, 2016 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

For many people, their last set of adult teeth appear much later in life. These are referred to as wisdom teeth, but sometimes they cause more problems than they solve. Your wisdom teeth are your third and last set of molars in your mouth. They usually appear in your late teens or early twenties, and, if properly aligned, can be a valuable asset to your mouth. However, more often than not wisdom teeth come in misaligned and in a horizontal position, which causes them to need to be removed. Wisdom teeth become impacted because they don’t have enough room in the mouth to develop normally. They can come in at a variety of angles depending on the alignment of your teeth. This can cause a host of problems that lead to their eventual removal. If you have impacted wisdom teeth call your dentist in Chicago Illinois. Save yourself pain, discomfort, and potential infection by getting them treated right away.

    Symptoms

Impacted wisdom teeth do not always cause negative symptoms, in fact some people can keep them without ever having an issue. However, in order to understand whether or not your impacted wisdom teeth need to be treated you should understand the symptoms. Here are just a few.
    • Oral infections
    • Red or inflamed gums
    • Tender or bleeding gums
    • Swelling around jaw
    • Bad breath
    • Difficulty opening mouth
    • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
    • Tooth decay
    • Cysts
    • Gum disease
    • Damage to other teeth
Symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth are not always present, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there is nothing wrong. If left untreated some wisdom teeth can cause issues that will manifest later on down the road when they’re much more severe.
