Wisdom teeth removal in Chicago is a serious procedure, but having them removed can help keep your oral health in tip-top shape. Dr. Tomaselli and his staff will help put your worries at ease before, during, and after the procedure. Once the surgery takes place, it's important to follow the steps for homecare to make sure you properly heal and prevent any complications, such as an unwanted infection.
Swelling
A couple of hours after your procedure, the swelling will begin. This is normal after getting your wisdom teeth removed, so don't fret! Apply ice packs to the outside of your mouth intermittently—you can do 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off—for up to two days. The ice packs help to reduce swelling, bruising, or any other discomfort.
Bleeding
You should expect some bleeding during the healing process. Keep your gauze pad over the extraction site for 30 minutes after your surgery. Did you know that you can also bite down on a moistened tea bag to help reduce the bleeding? The tannic acid in the tea can help contract the bleeding vessels and ultimately help the blood clot set. Don't rinse vigorously and don't use a straw once you are able to drink again.
Mouth Care
Make sure you limit eating for up to two hours after your surgery. Additionally, you should be resting for the rest of the day and the few that follow, which means avoiding rigorous exercise. Twelve hours after your surgery, gently rinse with diluted mouthwash or saltwater and carefully brush your teeth the night of the surgery while avoiding the surgical area as best as you can.
