Are you falling for these dental health myths? We get down to the tooth truths here!
MYTH: If I don't see anything wrong with my teeth, then they must be fine.
TRUTH: Your teeth may appear healthy, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily in perfect shape. There are a variety of oral health conditions that aren't visible, and skipping dental visits mean the issue will become worse.
MYTH: If my gums are bleeding, I shouldn't brush or floss.
TRUTH: Bleeding gums are actually a sign that you aren't brushing or flossing enough. Thoroughly, but gently, brush and floss twice per day, and you will notice the bleeding subside shortly.
MYTH: Chewing sugar-free gum after eating is just as effecting as brushing my teeth.
TRUTH: While this can freshen breath and stimulate saliva production, gum will not remove debris stuck on the surfaces and in between teeth.
MYTH: I'm too old for braces.
TRUTH: Braces aren't the only option for crooked or crowded teeth anymore. If you refuse to wear clunky, metal braces, don't worry! Invisalign is a clear plastic aligner that works like braces but is virtually unnoticeable. If you only have a couple crooked teeth, there are also veneers or dental implants.
MYTH: Teeth whitening will cause long-term damage.
TRUTH: Technological advancements in dental equipment allows us to whiten your teeth effectively with no side effects! Speak with your cosmetic dentist to find the best option for you, whether it be an in-office treatment or over-the-counter products.
MYTH: I don't need to worry about my child's dental health, because their baby teeth will fall out anyway.
TRUTH: Proper oral care at an early age will allow your child to continue these practices throughout their life. Not to mention, poor dental health for baby teeth can cause issues with permanent teeth.
