Are Your Wisdom Teeth Becoming A Nuisance?

Posted on June 28th, 2017 by Dr. Peter Tomaselli

When summer hits, many people decide to take advantage of their time off of work or school to get their wisdom teeth extracted before they head back in the fall. If your wisdom teeth are starting to bug you and you’re in search of a dentist that can handle your dental extractions in Chicago, keep Chicago Smile Design in mind.

    What Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

This form of dental extraction is a surgical procedure to remove the one to four permanent teeth that are located at the back corners of your mouth. Often times, a wisdom tooth doesn’t have enough room to grow in properly and is considered an impacted tooth. This can cause discomfort, infection or other dental problems and you dentist will usually recommend you get the tooth removed.

    Issues With Impacted Teeth

Because these teeth are the last ones in our mouths to grow in, they don’t always have enough room to do so correctly and become impacted. These teeth may then begin to grow in at an angle towards the tooth next to it or towards the back of the mouth, they might grow parallel to the jawbone as if they are “lying down”, or they can grow upright like normal but never emerge through the gums. These improper ways of growing can increase the likelihood of pain, infection, damage to other teeth or bone, or allow a cyst to form.

Why You Should Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Removing your wisdom teeth through dental extraction before they become a nuisance or as soon as they begin to bother you can be very helpful in preventing future dental issues. Even if your wisdom teeth are currently symptom-free, these teeth can still harbor disease and lead to pain and infection down the line. At Chicago Smile Design, Dr. Tomaselli is a highly skilled dentist that can take care of all of your dental extraction needs in Chicago.
